Stairlift Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will my insurance plan cover a stairglide? A: Unfortunately, No. In some cases your VA benefits may cover a stair lift, so if you are a Veteran, you should explore this route. Otherwise, Medicare, Medicaid and all private insurances have elected not to cover stairlifts. Under WV's Olmstead Act, you may be able to recieve funding for a loved one who is trying to move back home (or into your home) from and institutional setting: West Virginia Olmstead Act HOWEVER, Be sure to have your doctor write you a prescription for your stairlift and we won't have to charge you sales tax!
Q: Is my wall strong enough to support a stairlift? A: This is a common misconception. Stairlifts do not mount on the wall but on the stair treads.
Q: Why shouldn't I buy online or install my stair lift myself? A: We are factory trained and certified to install Bruno Stairlifts. If you are buying a stairglide, you are obviously concerned with your own, or a loved one's safety in navigating stairs. Why risk unsafely installing (or inadvertently tearing up) such an important/expensive piece of equipment? In our opinion, whatever you may save in taking this route is not worth the peace of mind in knowing backed by a competent company when service is needed. The Accessibility Equipment Manufacturers Association (AEMA) provides the most knowledgeable information on stairlifts and residential elevators. Read why it strongly advises against self-installation of any stairlift or residential elevator product. Your safety could be at risk! CLICK HERE TO READ THEIR POSITION ON SELF-INSTALLATION As a final note, we will not install a lift for you that you purchased online. We also stay busy enough with our highly satisfied customer base that we will either refuse to service a lift that you installed yourself or will charge exorbitant service fees at our discretion. I think you'll find that our pricing is fair enough that letting us handle the sale, installation, and service will be most sensible and affordable in the long run!
Q: What about the wiring? A: Bruno stairglides run on two 12 volt batteries, however, these batteries must be charged. This is done through an automatic charging system that continuously charges the batteries when the lift is not in use and parked at either end of the track. The only thing that must be plugged in is a small charger. This uses a regular 110 home outlet. If there is an outlet within six feet of the top or bottom of the staircase, you're all set. If not, call an electrician to have an outlet installed as this lies outside our field of expertise.
Q: Can my stairlift shoot off the end of the track and launch me through the roof? A: At an astounding speed of 30 feet per minute, this is highly unlikely, however, if Tim Taylor has been by for a visit, you may want to make use of the included safety belt:
